Photography of Holly Smith Pedlosky On Exhibit at The Gallery at Bellezza Day Spa

The Gallery at Bellezza Day Spa in Falmouth is exhibiting the work of the artist-photographer Holly Smith Pedlosky. The public is invited to view the exhibition, called Venice and the Secrets of Women, which will be on display until March 15. Business hours are from 9 am to 7 pm Mondays through Saturdays, and noon to 5 pm on Sundays.
Pedlosky’s work has been exhibited at both galleries and museums in Boston, Chicago, Venice, Italy, and on Cape Cod. She teaches photography and the history of photography at Lesley University, and since 1994, she has been teaching intensive photo workshops in Italy (in Venice and on Lake Como) for the International Center of Photography, based in New York City. She is the founder of Photography Atelier, a workshop for emerging photographic artists.
For 17 years The Falmouth photographer has been photographing laundry hanging to dry on islands in the Venetian Lagoon and the casalinghe (traditional Italian housewives) who hang it. “I began to realize that a woman's clothesline is like a bird's song,” she says. “It says to the world: ‘This is me. This is my family. This is my territory.’ Each casalinga has her own style of hanging out clothes. It is her signature, her line of music written in the air.
“Older Venetian casalinghe now sadly tell me that their daughters and granddaughters have no style at all—they are too busy working outside of the home to care about ancient domestic rituals. Soon Italian culture will be Americanized, they fear. Women will become like men. They may even buy dryers.”
The artwork in the show is available for purchase, either framed or unframed. In addition the artist will print to order in smaller sizes any of the images in the show. The spa takes no commission on any of the art that is sold.

Bellezza Day Spa is a full-service day spa located across from the library in downtown Falmouth. Bellezza started its gallery this past spring as a community service. The Gallery at Bellezza is booked for exhibitions through November of 2004.
